The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) has updated its Electrical Power Testing (EPT) Certification program. Updated exams for Levels I, II, and III are available beginning October 5, 2026, and the Level IV exam will be released in January 2027.
The program certifies technicians who inspect, test, and maintain the equipment used to generate, transmit, and distribute electrical power, and who evaluate that equipment for acceptance into service, continued serviceability, or required maintenance.
Together, this equipment forms infrastructure that is vital to daily life and economic growth. Technicians in the field work with high-value assets and consequential procedures, and as they advance, they build deeper knowledge of complex power and test equipment, along with an understanding of power systems and the ramifications of actions or problems within them.
Technical areas include electrically safe work conditions; electrical theory and components; testing equipment and procedures; protection, control, and automation; and documentation and reporting.
Exams are computer-based and delivered at Pearson testing centers, giving candidates more flexible exam dates and appointment times, immediate scheduling and confirmation, and faster scoring.
To earn certification, candidates must:
Certification is maintained through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and renewed every three years. Full details are available in the Electrical Power Testing Candidate Handbook.
A high-quality certification validates an individual’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in a defined profession or role. It helps employers and other stakeholders identify qualified professionals while mitigating risk and strengthening consumer protection and public safety.
