April 27, 2026 – Highway Construction Inspection (HCI) Update 

NICET has updated the Highway Construction Inspection exams on April 27, 2026. Candidates may now bring a physical copy of FP-24 during testing for all levels of HCI exams. For the HCI Level I exam, candidates may also bring a physical copy of MUTCD (13th Edition). References may be printed in whole or in part. They must be bound or secured in a three-ring binder with a title page. For more information about references, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level. New practice tests are also available.


April 6, 2026 – Systems Software Integrator (SSI) Launch 

NICET, in collaboration with industry volunteers, has completed the launch of the Systems Software Integrator (SSI) certification program. The pilot testing for SSI ended December 31, 2025. The SSI certification is intended for professionals responsible for integrating software into operational systems where safety, reliability, cybersecurity, and performance are critical. Applicable industries include transportation, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, national defense, pharmaceuticals, and other sectors that rely on complex cyberphysical systems. A new practice test is also available. 


December 1, 2025 – Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems (ITWBS) Update

NICET has updated the ITWBS Level I and Level II exams as of June 2, 2025. Pilot testing for ITWBS III has ended and the updated ITWBS Level III exam is available as of December 1, 2025. NFPA Codes and Standards (as a view-only format) will be available on-screen to candidates. Candidates may also bring physical copies of the books during testing. For more information about references, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level. New practice tests are also available.


December 2, 2024 – In-Building Public Safety Communications (IB-PSC) Update

With the help of volunteer subject matter experts, NICET updated the In-Building Public Safety Communications (IB-PSC) exams on December 2, 2024. Questions that previously referenced NFPA 1221 (2019) have been updated to NFPA 1225 (2022). For more information about references, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level. New practice tests are also available.


October 7, 2024 – Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems (ITFAS) Update

NICET has updated the Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems exams on October 7, 2024, to the 2022 edition of NFPA 72. NFPA Codes & Standards (as a view-only format) will be available on-screen to candidates. Candidates may also bring physical copies of the books during testing.  For specific information about what references are allowed, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level. New practice tests are also available. 


July 8, 2024 – Water-Based Systems Layout (WBSL) Update

NICET has updated the WBSL exams as of July 8, 2024. The updated exams are based on the 2022 edition of NFPA 13. NFPA Codes and Standards (as a view-only format) will be available on-screen in all exams. Candidates may also bring physical copies of the references to use during testing.  For specific information about what references are allowed and will be available on-screen, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level.  New practice tests are also available.

The updated WBSL III - Hydraulics exam now contains a scheduled 15-minute break. This time is NOT part of the allotted time to answer exam questions. Candidates will be able to review questions from the first section before the break but will NOT have access to the first section questions after the break.


March 25, 2024 – Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) Update

With the help of volunteer subject matter experts, NICET completed regular maintenance and updates for FAS. New exams reference the 2022 edition of NFPA 72, the 2020 edition of NFPA 70, and the 2021 edition of NFPA 101. NFPA Codes & Standards will be available on-screen to candidates in a view-only format. Candidates may also bring physical copies of the books during testing. For more information about references, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level. New practice tests are also available. 

The Level IV exam contains a scheduled 30-minute break. This time is NOT part of the allotted time to answer exam questions. Candidates will be able to review questions from the first section before the break, but will NOT have access to the first section questions after the break.
