(revised March 25, 2022)
Qualified candidates may be awarded up to eighteen (18) months of relevant technician work experience credit if the following conditions are met:
1. (a) The applicant obtained an ABET/TAC accredited or equivalent (see note) associate or baccalaureate engineering or engineering technology degree related to the subfield certification area.
(b) The applicant has acquired the minimum required full-time engineering technician level work experience directly related to the certification practice area.
NOTE: The applicant must supply NICET with equivalency evidence and have the educational institution send an official transcript showing the date of graduation, the courses taken, and the name of the degree granted. NICET must receive the official transcript directly from the educational institution.
2. (a) The applicant has completed an educational institution’s engineering, or engineering technology work force development program specifically designed to prepare candidates for certification in the related subfield areas. The educational institution must have a current agreement with NICET.
(b) The program includes a subfield specific internship, or the applicant has acquired the minimum required of full-time engineering technician level work experience directly related to the certification practice area.
The work experience credit will be reviewed upon NICET’s receipt of an official college transcript and/or other official documentation showing that the applicant has successfully completed the required course work and/or program.
The amount of work experience credit awarded for education, of up to 18 months, cannot exceed the maximum period of "related" work experience credit (such as craft or foreign work experience) that can be awarded for the specific certification practice area and level.
