2023 Water-Based Systems Layout (WBSL) Job Analysis Surveys

NICET is updating our Water-Based Systems Layout (WBSL) program.

As part of the Job Task Analysis, a panel of WBSL subject matter experts (SMEs) recently met to analyze the work in WBSL. NICET wants to validate their work by surveying the population of individuals currently active in the WBSL field.

Your input will be used to validate the work of the expert panel and to update NICET's understanding of the specialty areas. Also, the survey results will be used to prioritize the content of the certification examination.

There are four surveys corresponding with the four Levels of WBSL certification. Below, you will find the links to the surveys that were sent via email to current NICET WBSL certified individuals. If you have already completed the survey(s) from the email, please do not take the survey(s) again.

We thank you for helping NICET lay the foundation for this program.

WBSL Level I - Job Analysis Survey

The candidates for NICET certification at Level I in Water-Based Systems Layout should have the knowledge, experience, and basic skills needed to work in the industry. Under frequent supervision, they perform limited job tasks. They are learning much like a trainee or entry-level technician about flow tests, field checks, coordination, and data entry. They prepare and clean up drawings and plans and complete basic hydraulic equations. Level I technicians have at least 6 months of experience in water-based systems layout.

WBSL Level II - Job Analysis Survey

The candidates for NICET certification at Level II in Water-Based Systems Layout should have the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to work more independently than Level I technicians. Under reduced supervision, they perform routine job tasks. They work on projects and perform routine hydraulic calculations independently, prepare close out documents, and participate project management. Level II technicians have at least 2 years of experience in water-based systems layout.

WBSL Level III - Job Analysis Survey

The candidates for NICET certification at Level III in Water-Based Systems Layout should have the knowledge, experience and skills needed to work independently with codes, standards, plans, and specifications to produce complete submittals for all types of water-based fire protection systems. They oversee Level I and II technicians and design and coordinate projects from start to finish. Level III technicians have at least 5 years of experience in water-based systems layout. Note: There are two exams listed at Level III – General Plans Preparation and Hydraulics & Water Supply Planning. Both are required for certification.
