Previous issues of News from NICET have chronicled NICET's transition from Work Element (WE) testing to the Standard Model/CBT format. This issue reports on Fire Alarm Systems (FAS)--testing for Level I began in February 2010.

This is just the beginning though, NICET staff and Subject Matter Expert (SME) volunteers continue to work on transitioning all of NICET's programs to the new format. If you have ever thought you could make the NICET tests better, here is your chance. This issue also contains invitations for fire protection technicians to apply to join the process. We are looking for a select few that meet varying experience levels and qualifications.

Soon, NICET will begin inviting technicians to continue the process for the Construction Materials Testing (CMT), Highway Construction and we will begin Bridge Safety Inspection programs. Keep an eye on your inbox and www.nicet.org for updates.

Also included in this issue are the 2010 Salary Survey, upcoming events, the Technician Spotlight, and the TCCC.

Sincerely,
Chip Hollis
NICET Manager, Marketing & Public Relations

2010 Salary Survey
Ever wonder what the average salary and/or benefits package is for a technician/technologist in your area? Or in another area of the country? With your help NICET can generate this information.

In February, NICET launched the 2010 Salary Survey and we have received approximately 3,000 responses to date; but we still need your help. The purpose of the survey is to:
  • Provide mean salaries for comparison purposes;
  • Demonstrate market trends and rates;
  • Provide a tool to help evaluate the range of benefits and services offered; and
  • Aid in determining competitive compensation in your area.
We encourage every individual working in the engineering and technology field to participate in this effort to determine a fair and reasonable assessment of an average technician/technologist compensation package. The salary topics include:
  • State/region of employment;
  • Salary;
  • Benefits package;
  • Years of experience;
  • Education level; and
  • Professional development.
We acknowledge that we all live busy lives; therefore, NICET is offering one (1) CPD point towards recertification, a free summary of the national salary survey, and free random giveaways to those individuals who participate in the 2010 Salary Survey. If you have questions/concerns about the administration of the survey, please feel free to contact the Marketing Department at 888-476-4238 option 6.

Fire Alarm Systems-
NICET Fire Alarm Certification Program
Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Begins
NICET's Transition to the Standard Model/CBT Format

February 1, 2010 NICET released the first exam for Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) in the Standard Model/CBT. FAS is NICET's first program to transition from Work Elements to the Standard Model.  All NICET programs are scheduled to make the transition over the next few years to provide scheduling convenience, faster scoring, and industry-standard testing methods.

The first exam is for FAS Level I, and all new applicants are now required to test in this new format. Some of the first technicians to take the exam have said, "This new test will block the unqualified from certification." and "The test center was very professional...top notch." We also learned of a concern about the layout of the score report that is provided immediately after the exam. Apparently, the statement that the exam requirement was met, can't be found quickly enough. We appreciate all of your feedback -- it truly helps NICET to improve our programs and the certification process.

Work Elements (WE)

All those that have recently tested, are scheduled to test, or are certified in FAS in the WE format may continue to test in the WE format until June 30, 2011. All applications must be submitted online or postmarked by January 31, 2011. Applications must include candidate demographics, WE selections, payment, and posted test center and date selections. To apply online you must Register with MyNICET. If you have already registered please Login to access the application.

Standard Format/CBT
The release of FAS Level II has been delayed until April 1, 2010. The beta testing and cut score process took longer than expected.  Beta testing for Level III is ready to begin. Please Apply Now (Application Closed)if you have 2 to 8 years of experience in FAS. The test is free and passing scores can be applied toward NICET certification. A $100 fee is charged for review of the experience application for successful candidates. All requirements must be met for certification. The scheduled release dates of Levels III and IV are now June and September 2010 respectively.

The following is a set of instructions and links to apply for the Standard Model/CBT FAS exams.

A NICET Partner:
The Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council (TCCC)

Today, transportation agencies are facing tough workforce challenges caused by a confluence of factors, of which the most important include the retirements of skilled personnel, improved technology, and new materials.  To compound the challenge, all of these factors are occurring during a period of uncertain (and diminishing) resources resulting from high energy prices and structural changes in the public's demand for transportation.  It is precisely at times such as the present that agencies need to be operating at peak efficiency, which in turn requires a well trained, current, and competent work force. In fact, the need for agencies to remain current makes training a necessity rather than a luxury. Read More

Take initiative or move over...
If opportunity presents itself will you wait for it to knock or build a door? With the economy in the current shape taking the initiative is essential. Both employees and employers are seeking ways to distinguish themselves due to limited opportunities.

So, how do you know if you're an individual who possesses the trait of taking the initiative? Certain characteristics play into an individual's ability to recognize and complete a task requiring attention, without receiving instructions. If you demonstrate the following characteristics you more than likely are an individual who takes the initiative:
  • Demonstrate a willingness to take action;
  • Act on a task instantaneously;
  • Have the ability to visualize the end result; and
  • Are a self starter.
Initiative is not only categorized by your readiness to embark upon a bold new task, but also the impact on: your workload, your boss's workload, the customer(s), and the company overall--including the prosperity of the company. Occasionally individuals confuse a mundane task with taking the initiative. Completing a routine task does not improve or further the company. Going beyond the call of duty and/or creating a process that maximizes the efficiency of a company is taking the initiative.

In closing, every second provides an opportunity. How you choose, to be reactive or proactive, determines how your future will play out. Remember, "A good plan implemented today is better than a perfect plan implemented tomorrow."-George Patton
