The Value of NICET's Certification Programs
NICET's nationally recognized certification programs lay out a path for your career advancement from entry to senior level responsibilities. Designed by industry experts to provide engineering technology fields with a qualified workforce, our programs are increasingly used by employers and specifiers to measure job skills and knowledge.
Once you've met NICET's standards, you will be awarded NICET's respected certificate (suitable for framing) and a wallet card. Your name will appear in our national and state directories, and you'll receive a newsletter about NICET's efforts to recognize and promote your crucial role on the engineering team.
Technician certification requires testing (written, multiple choice) and documentation including a work history, recommendations, and, for most programs, supervisor verification of specific experience. You can submit the documentation with your testing application (recommended to expedite the final result) or send it later.
Technologist certification requires a 4-year engineering technology degree (no testing required), and at the advanced level, documentation including a work history and endorsements.

How is NICET certification different from . . .
Training certificates? Many training courses offer certificates of completion at the end of the session. Some of these are given for attendance, while some require a test on the material that had been presented. While these can be valuable for the particular skills or knowledge covered in the course, NICET's professional certification is based on testing that covers a broad range of job knowledge, verification of job performance, and an evaluation of work experience. NICET certification represents, not a course outcome, but a career level.
NICET encourages technicians to pursue training and educational opportunities as a way to quickly obtain some of the important job knowledge necessary for career advancement. When they have integrated that training into their work processes and tempered it with some experience; then they have made themselves ready for higher levels of responsibility and for the next level of NICET certification.
Employer testing? Some employers use in-house testing as a qualifier for hiring and/or promoting. These may be well-made tests, depending on the company's development process. Whatever their quality, they carry the inherent limitation of their purpose: They were designed by and for the specific company/job combination. There is usually not any objective third party involvement, and the test results are not meaningful for any other purpose. NICET's tests are developed by committees of experts from a variety of work settings and its credential is recognized across the country. Many companies use NICET as their standard of qualification.
Licensure? A license is a credential that is granted by a state or local jurisdiction that is required under law for the performance of certain types of work. NICET does not and cannot grant a license; its certifications are national and voluntary. Increasingly, NICET certifications are being used by jurisdictions as a qualifier for various types of regulated work.
