Geotechnical Engineering Technology
Test Development and Supporting Organizations
With the technical assistance of the California Geotechnical Engineers Association (C.G.E.A.), this program became operational December 1, 1984, when it replaced a two-part geotechnical certification program that had been introduced in 1977.
Through a practice analysis, a volunteer panel of experts identified engineering technicians' job tasks and responsibilities and categorized them into work elements. Volunteers then submitted and reviewed examination questions for each of the work elements. Industry members at varying levels of experience then field tested the exam questions.
Technical guidance is currently provided by geotechnical engineering technicians, supervisors, and subject matter experts from a variety of stakeholder groups, including state highway departments, county and city agencies, FHWA, private consulting firms, and testing laboratories.
