Electrical Power Testing

NICET certification in Electrical Power Testing has been designed for technicians who test equipment used in the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. The scope of the program is summarized in the box below.

Scope of Electrical Power Testing Program

This certification program is intended for technicians who are engaged in inspection, testing, and periodic maintenance of electrical power equipment, and evaluation of such equipment for acceptance for service, continued serviceability, or required maintenance.
The various types of equipment that generate, transport, transform, store, route, and control electrical power together constitute an infrastructure that is vital to our way of life and our economic potential. Technicians who advance in this career field must have the skills and temperament to work with high-value equipment and consequential procedures; and must develop knowledge of complex power equipment, test equipment, and test procedures. At more advanced levels, they must develop an understanding of power systems and test procedures, and the ramifications of various actions or problems.

Levels of Certification

Certifications will be offered at each of four Levels, each representing progressively greater knowledge and experience. Content Outlines show the range of work that the technician should have had knowledge of and experience with at the time of certification.

Certification Requirements

Level I —Certifications are now being awarded
Under the supervision of a higher-level technician, work safely around electrical power equipment and cabling; identify test equipment; and make basic electrical connections.

Content Outline, Level I

Selected General References, Level I

Level II —Certifications are now being awarded
Under general supervision, isolate and ground power equipment safely; connect test equipment; and conduct and document standard tests of basic (single-function) equipment.

Content Outline, Level II

Selected General References, Level II

Level III —Certifications are now being awarded
Manage switching procedures; conduct tests of complex (multi-function) equipment; analyze test and equipment data; and plan a job and lead a team.

Content Outline, Level III

Selected General References, Level III

Level IV —Targeted Availability: March 2012
Conduct tests of complex metering and relay systems; evaluate tests, test equipment, test results, and power system performance; recommend actions to maintain or improve system performance; and lead multi-team projects.

Applying for Certification

Qualified individuals are awarded certification on the basis of successful testing and documented work experience.

Program Development and Support

This program is the product of the time and effort of dozens of subject matter experts from all parts of the electrical testing industry, who came together to determine the scope and structure of the program, produce the Content Outlines, write and review test questions, and set the test passing standard and the work experience requirements. NICET thanks the individuals who contributed by participating in one or more of the various development meetings, and the companies that supported their travel and time.

NICET thanks NETA, the InterNational Electrical Testing Association, for its support and encouragement for the development of this program.

NICET is grateful to the following companies, whose concern for quality led them to provide facilities and support for program development meetings
